History

On a bitterly cold morning in January 1959, fourteen pre-schoolers met in the basement of Manotick Public School and Manotick Co-operative Nursery School (MCNS) was born. Fees were set at $15/month with rent at $10/month. The first newsletter reminded parents there was a 7 day exclusion policy for polio. At that time, kindergarten classes had not been established in the local school so Manotick Co-operative Nursery School attempted to fill the needs of both pre-school and kindergarten-aged children. With careful budgeting, the first MCNS purchase was a piano.

Further relocations included Manotick United Church, the Legion Hall, St. James Anglican Church, and an office building at 1165 John Street, which was shared by the Ontario Provincial Police.  After extensive fundraising, Manotick Co-operative Nursery School secured its own permanent home in the Manotick Community Center (5572 Doctor Leach Drive) in September 1995.  Due to increasing growth in the Riverside South area, the Nursery School opened a satellite location there in September 2004. First situated in the Rideauview Community Center, increasing demand meant expanding once more to the Community Room at Moncion’s.

Today we are one of the oldest and biggest nursery schools in Ottawa.  We look forward to yet another 50 years of learning and growing in the community.
